Lake Cathie

Lake Cathie (pronounced ‘cat-eye’) is just 12 kilometres south of Port Macquarie.

Lake Cathie’s large saltwater lake is the second largest estuarine salt marsh area in NSW.  Venture up to the northern headland where a fantastic forest walk has been established, with a viewing platform which offers fabulous views across the lake and out to the ocean. The town is a popular holiday destination on the Mid North Coast because of its tranquil location which hosts the lake, lagoon and beaches. It has a Woolworths supermarket, service station a local Tavern, Lake Cathie Bowling Club which has the world’s largest bowl out the front, bakery, fish & chip shop, coffee shop, pharmacy, post office, a newsagent and a bargain shop. Its main feature is a tidal lake fed by the ocean daily. Several time throughout the year the lake is closed over by shifting sands and becomes dark in colour due to the tannins in local flora.
